To Thomas,

There is so much that I want to say to you but often do not because as your Dad it is in my nature to want to protect you. It doesn’t matter what it is. It could be a dangerous situation like crossing the road, a tough homework assignment, a bigger kid picking on you, or just trying to keep you from worrying about something adults should only worry about. I want to make sure you will always be ok.

However, sometimes trying to protect you at all costs is not the best answer. I think someday when you are an adult you will understand that more but for now you will have to trust me. But know that dads are not perfect. No one is. I try to always do what I think is best for you but sometimes I make mistakes doing so.

I’m sorry for being over-protective of you sometimes. As a result, I have made you feel like you can’t always come to me with a question and that couldn’t be further from the truth. From now on I promise to try not to overreact and if I don’t answer right away I will tell you that I need to think about it and answer you later.

What I don’t need to wait to tell you and what I do know for sure is that you are an amazing son. You are all the things a Dad dreams about when he thinks about be being blessed with a son. You are smart, kind, funny, and athletic (just like your birthday cake said). Whether we are shooting hoops, playing lacrosse, doing homework or just relaxing watching tv I am so happy being with you. The days that I don’t get to do that with you are not the same.

Thomas Quyen Mancuso you are seven years old now and just like the day you were born I couldn’t be prouder.
