Happy 5th Birthday, Thomas

Hi Thomas,
You turned 5 today and like all parents say “it’s seems like only yesterday you were just born.” In a lot of ways, that statement is true. In an infinite number of ways that couldn’t be further than the truth.
Here are 5 reasons that it feels more like 50 years sometimes:
5. All the worrying I’ve done since you’ve been born has given me a lot of gray hair.
4. I have said “Thomas eat your dinner” 6,321,345 times.
3. I have said “Thomas, I said EAT your dinner” 6, 321,344 times. On October 10, 2009, you actually listened the first time I said it.
2. I can’t believe how much you’ve grown up already. It must be more than 5 years.
1. I can’t remember life without you and I’ve got a pretty good memory. So that previous life must have happened a long time ago.
In all seriousness, you are a great kid that knows how to drive me crazy sometimes. I think you get that from your mother.
I am proud to be your Dad and I am proud of the person you are turning into. You are old enough to know the difference between right and wrong and innocent to still ask if we think Uncle Jim is bowling with God when it thunders. I love all of that.
Today was a great day, we had fun in lots of ways, and at the end of the day you could sum it all up by the last thing that happened. A player turned to you and said “we have a present for you”.
Just then he handed you a ball. We most certainly had a ball today, son.
Love,
Dad

Dear Thomas,

Happy 5th Birthday to you, dear June Bug. I don’t really know if I can find words that truly express how I feel about you. You continue to make me smile, make me proud and make me feel loved. Thank you Thomas for all you do for me and for everyone around you. I can’t name all the things that you have done in your short & sweet life so far that have made me proud of you. I could say that I am proud of you for knowing how to write your name, remembering a funny story so that you can share with others, the way that you remind me to say blessing before we eat or the way you can score 6 goals in a soccer game. Yes, all those things make me proud of you but there is one thing that makes me most proud to be your mommy. Last week at your preschool graduation, one of your teachers was telling me how much she enjoyed having you in class and how you have made so many friends even though it was your first year at this preschool. She told me that everyone in the class had to name who their best friend was in class for a memory book. She said that nearly every child in the class named you as their best friend. Thomas, since the day you were born, I have always been proud of you because of your kind soul. It makes me so proud that you make friends easily and try to make everyone around you feel happy. Thomas, your gift of friendship & love is truly special and I am so proud of you. Happy Birthday, Thomas. I really, really love you – infinity, infinity.

Love, Mommy
